Homemade ideas for holiday decorating

Holiday season is round the corner, with those jingle bells within earshot. It’s the time for celebrations, feasts, family get togethers and of course, some much needed holiday cheer inside your homes. What better way than to decorate the house yourself? Here are some great ideas for homemade holiday decoration.

  • Ice lanterns – If you have plastic cartons lying around, fill them up with water, freeze them and turn them into magical ice lanterns for your garden or porch.

  • Book gifts – A lovely way to make the house look festive without any investment is to simply wrap up all the books on your bookshelf with left over wrapping paper. Use different festive designs and stack them up on bookshelves and other shelves to add those festive vibes.

  • Mini festive trees – simply pick up a fallen branch from a tree outside, get some spray paint on it and stick it into a glass jar or vase. Hang your Christmas tree decorations from its branches and voila, you have yourself a mini DIY tree.

  • Painted snowflakes – Use some washable paint marker on your mirrors to draw up little snowflakes. You could also do the same on other glass surfaces like doors and windows.

  • Pine love – Fill in your pots with fresh pine and spruce them up with twinkly lights. Add a pot to each step in your entrance and you have a lovely festive look ready.

  • Painted doormats – Transform your plain old coir doormat into a Christmassy affair by painting Christmas trees on them.

  • Snowy walls – Pick a nice dark wall area in the house and make snowflakes out of ice-cream sticks. Spray paint them and stick them on the walls to have a lovely Christmassy wall decal.

  • Pine garlands and ribbons – Dress up your stairway bannisters and any other railings in your house with pine garlands. Then casually tie up some red ribbons around them to really add that Christmas vibe to the house.

  • Spoon trees – Use plastic spoons to make mini trees. They can also be made to look like pine cones. Whatever they look like, they sure do look Christmassy and make for cute festive pieces to decorate your table.

  • Wreaths – Spruce up your windows by adding beautifully decorated wreaths using embroidery hoops.

  • Lantern décor – If you have lanterns at home, fill them up with colorful decorative items and place it at the entrance for a welcoming and festive entryway.

  • Starry sky – Hang some Christmas stars in different shapes and materials in different levels. Use a combination of paper, metal and wooden stars to create a lovely look.

  • Plaid up – Plaid spells classic Christmas. You could use up your old plaid blankets and stitch them up into cushion covers, table covers, or tree skirts. This instantly adds a Christmas look to the house.
